Dental implants in Christchurch
Missing a tooth or two? A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once it has fused with the bone it supports a crown, bridge or denture that looks and works like a natural tooth.
Key benefits of dental implants
- They look and feel natural, so you can eat and smile without worry
- With regular maintenance, implants can last for decades
- Unlike dentures, they stimulate the jawbone and help keep it healthy
- Healthy neighbouring teeth don't need to be cut down, unlike a bridge
- Comfortable and stable, with no slipping
Many patients tell us they forget the implant is there after a while.
How dental implants work
An implant acts as an artificial tooth root. It is made from biocompatible titanium and placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time. It then holds a replacement tooth, such as a crown, bridge or denture, giving you a strong base that works just like the real thing.
Who can have dental implants?
You may be suited to implants if you have:
- One or more missing teeth
- Enough healthy jawbone to support an implant
- Healthy gums
- A preference for a fixed option rather than a removable denture
We check all of this at your first visit to make sure implants are right for you.
The implant process, step by step
- Consultation: we examine your teeth and bone, take X-rays or 3D scans where needed, and plan your treatment
- Implant placement: the titanium post is placed under local anaesthetic (sedation is available) and left to heal and fuse with the bone
- Abutment: once it has healed, a small connector is fitted on top of the implant
- Final tooth: your natural-looking crown, bridge or denture is fitted to finish the treatment
Healing takes a few months, and you won't be left with a visible gap in the meantime.
All-on-X for a full arch
If you are missing all or most of the teeth in a jaw, All-on-X restores the whole arch on a small number of implants, usually four to six. It gives you a fixed set of teeth rather than a plate that has to be taken out at night.
It is a significant treatment and not right for everyone. We will assess your bone, your bite and your general health, and be straightforward with you about whether you are a good candidate.
Everyday care for your implants
Looking after implants is much like looking after your own teeth:
- Brush and floss every day
- Come in for regular check-ups
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
