Restorative care

Tooth fillings and restorations

Cavities and small chips shouldn't spoil your smile. We use tooth-coloured fillings to repair teeth with a natural-looking, durable result that blends in with the rest of your smile.

What are tooth-coloured fillings?

Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite fillings, are made from a durable resin matched to the shade of your natural teeth. Unlike traditional metal fillings they are practically invisible, so a restored tooth looks and feels like your own.

When do you need a filling?

You might need a filling if you have:

  • A cavity caused by tooth decay
  • Minor chips or cracks in a tooth
  • Worn enamel from grinding or general wear

Tooth-coloured fillings restore both the health and the look of a tooth, which makes them a great choice for teeth that show when you smile.

Benefits of tooth-coloured fillings

  • Natural appearance: the resin matches the shade of your teeth for a seamless look
  • Durable and strong: composite bonds to the tooth, strengthening it and reducing the risk of fractures
  • Mercury-free: a modern alternative to silver amalgam
  • Keeps more of your tooth: less natural tooth needs to be removed than for a metal filling

What to expect

  1. Preparation: we numb the area so you're comfortable throughout
  2. Decay removal: the decayed part of the tooth is gently removed
  3. Filling: the resin is placed in layers, shaped to the natural contours of your tooth and hardened with a special light
  4. Polishing: the filling is polished to blend in with the teeth around it

Caring for your fillings

With good care, tooth-coloured fillings last a long time. Keep up your brushing and flossing, avoid biting on hard objects, and come in for regular check-ups so we can keep an eye on them. If you think you have a cavity or need an old filling replaced, get in touch.

Common questions

How long does a filling last?+
A well-placed composite filling in a low-stress area commonly lasts seven to ten years or more. Lifespan depends on the size of the filling, your bite, grinding habits and oral hygiene.
Will I be numb?+
Usually yes, we use local anaesthetic so you feel no pain. Very small fillings in enamel can sometimes be done without it. Numbness typically wears off in two to three hours.
Can I eat afterwards?+
Composite fillings are fully set before you leave, so you can eat as soon as the numbness has gone. We suggest waiting until sensation returns so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
